→ Hi Sergio, can you introduce yourself ? What has been your background?
I am an Industrial Designer based in Mexico, i am particularly interested in furniture and objects and I am specializing in those fields.
→ How was the Kamui Chair imagined?
I wanted to create a versatile piece that could be used in a variety of environments, adapting to different types of solid wood and textile according to the space it would be in.
The intention was to create a chair that embraces the material it is made out of, expressing through the different types of wood joinery implemented and resulting in an effortless, light and atemporal piece.
→ What choices did you make regarding materials ?
I decided to go with tulipwood, also known as poplar wood, the idea was to make the first chair suitable for exterior spaces, and this material has the adecuate qualities to make this happen. for the fabric i used canvas fabric, wich is a strong durable material that is also suitable for exteriors. Another combination of materials, and my personal favorite, is beech wood with a white canvas fabric.
→ How does this echo your design practice ?
I believe that nature is a compliment for design and viceversa, meaning that objects should be able to adapt and trigger this visceral sensation of a natural material, as a part of my purpose is to bring this feeling into spaces through the senses, specialy with wood.
→ What are your wishes for this object?
I hope this piece gives me the opportunity and exposure to work on more projects in the scale of furniture, objects and even interiors.
→ The Kamui Chair is the winner of this year's Ahec design awards. How have such events contributed to your professional development?
I think these platforms like AHEC Design Awards open a lot of opportunities for emerging designers, for me it allowed me to show more people my work and my process, and also to connect with other designers and craftsmen that were involved.
