Welcome to this interview with Camille Paillard and Romain Voulet, the founders of CP-RV, a creative studio based in London and Marseille. In this interview, we will learn more about their collaboration with UTIL, a young object design brand based in Lisbon, on the KGT project. We will also discuss the inspiration behind their designs and their current projects. Let's get started!
→ Camille, Romain, can you introduce us to your CP — RV studio?
CP — RV is a collaborative project run by Camille Paillard and Romain Voulet, working between London and Marseille. Our creative office designs products, home furniture, interior spaces and things to live with.
→ The KGT tray is edited by Util, a young object brand based in Lisbon. Can you tell us more about this collaboration?
We have been following UTIL since their beginning, knowing their capabilities and the quality of their products, and understanding what they represent, we decided to suggest to them the project KGT. We thought this project had to be made by them. We contacted them — they were excited about a metal box — and it's quite rare for a brand to be as excited about a metal box as we were — that is how we started our collaboration!
→ What is the starting point of the KGT project?
The project takes its roots from one question: What would be a good storage system? We thought of the simplicity of a crate, the traditional industrial typology for transporting fruits and vegetables. A crate, but that is a bit more home friendly, that would fit nicely in a domestic interior. So what are the essential characteristics of a crate? It is a simple container, a box that stacks and that is portable by hand. That was our starting point.
→ More generally, what inspirations have shaped your taste?
In general we are mostly inspired by art and architecture, our daily journeys and travels. We are interested in how a culture interacts with objects. We aspire to make things that doesn’t get in between you and your routine but instead that feels natural.
→ Finally, what is your current project?
We are working on several projects at the moment, ranging from textile products, accessories and furniture, we are also participating to few exhibitions this summer, happening in Paris, Milan and Marseille.
